Foreign jihadists gain high positions in Syrian army

The new Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa does not forget that he was previously called Abu Muhammad al-Julani and promotes Hayat Tahrir al-Sham field commanders, including foreign jihadists, to command posts in the army of the new Syria.

As reported by Reuters, citing informed sources, the new regime appointed 49 representatives of the group as senior commanders. Three foreigners received the rank of brigadier generals, three – colonels.

“This is a small price to pay for the self-sacrifice shown by foreign jihadists during our struggle for freedom against the Assad dictatorship,” a source in HTS told the agency.

Thousands of foreign jihadists took part in the civil war in Syria, the vast majority of them as part of the Islamic State. Al-Julani did a lot to clear Hayat Tahrir al-Sham of foreigners, but their presence remained limited.
