The Prime Minister of Greenland announced his intention to achieve independence from Denmark

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Boerup Egede has announced his intention to achieve independence from Denmark, Reuters reports. In his New Year’s address to the population, Egede emphasized that the time has come to create our own future.

He noted that Greenland does not have full equality in relations with Denmark and added that the decision on independence is made by the people of Greenland, but did not say when the vote might take place.

Greenland’s government has rejected Donald Trump’s proposals to buy the island twice, in 2019 and 2024. Let us recall that a few days ago Trump said that establishing control over Greenland was an “absolute necessity” for the United States. On the west coast of the island there is the Pitufik base of the American space forces. This led Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen to declare that Greenland was not for sale.

Parliamentary elections are due to take place in Greenland before April 6.
