American justice does not want a postponement of TikTok ban

The US Department of Justice does not want to know about a postponement of the law that obliges the Chinese ByteDance to sell the American parts of the popular video app TikTok. US President-elect Donald Trump had asked the US Supreme Court for this.

The law in question stipulates that ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, must sell the American parts of the app by January 19. If that doesn’t happen, the popular video app will no longer be available in the US. TikTok has an estimated 170 million users in the US, but many politicians are concerned that China has access to all kinds of users’ personal data through the app.

The US Supreme Court is yet to rule on the case on January 10, but President-elect Donald Trump has already said he opposes the ban. He moves into the White House on January 20, a day after the ban was due to take effect, and claims he can broker a deal with China on the issue. Trump therefore asked the Supreme Court to delay the law.

The Justice Department is now urging judges to enforce the law. According to the department, ByteDance has not demonstrated that it can win the case.
