Georgian opposition blocs call on the head of the OSCE PA to postpone his visit to Tbilisi

Three Georgian opposition coalitions: “Strong Georgia”, “For Change” and “Unity: National Movement” have called on OSCE PA President Pia Kauma to postpone his visit to Georgia due to the situation in the country. They noted that this would be the “best solution” until the authorities call for new elections and announce the release of civil activists arrested during protests in Tbilisi.

“Gakharia for Georgia” party did not join the statement.

In the letter, the opposition forces write about election violations, the nomination of Mikheil Kavelashvili as a presidential candidate from the “Georgian Dream” party, violence against the protesters. They also noted that the visit will be considered expedient only if it contributes to the preparation of new elections and the release of political prisoners.

Pia Kauma intends to visit Tbilisi on January 8-10 and meet with representatives of the Georgian authorities.
