Venezuela: National Assembly elects Jorge Rodríguez as president for the fifth consecutive year

The official deputy Jorge Rodriguez was re-elected this Sunday, for the fifth consecutive year, as president of the National Assembly (AN, Parliament) of Venezuela, majority chavistawhich controls the Legislative Branch since 2021.

Upon his appointment, Rodríguez swore “defend the truth, life, fight to maintain peace” in Venezuela, as well as defeat “to extremism” and to whom “threaten” the right to “live free, sovereign and independent forever”.

For the board of directors of this last year of the legislative five-year period, they were also re-elected Pedro Infanteas first vice president; America Perezas second vice president, Maria Alejandra Hernandezas secretary, and Jose Molinaas undersecretary.

Of the 277 current deputies, 256 are Chavistas, 20 from the minority opposition aligned with the ruling party and one from the Popular Revolutionary Alternative, a left-wing coalition made up of politicians critical of the Government of Nicolás Maduro.

The opposition deputy José Gregorio Correa said that a Parliament of “overwhelming majority” does not help the reality of the country, while considering that “It cannot be that dissent becomes a discomfort”which is why he advocated dialogue between the parties.

This year is the last of the parliamentary period, so, before the end of 2025, legislative elections from which the deputies will emerge to replace the current ones and begin their journey on January 5, 2026 for the next five-year period.
