Crete (Greece) – Clara Thomann puts her hands on her baby bump and beams into the camera. Behind her the sun slowly sets into the Cretan Sea. It is one of the last photos of the young teacher.
Clara was six months pregnant pregnantspent a few days on the Greek island of Crete with her partner Elliott. It was supposed to be a last vacation for the two of them before their son Theodoro Clari was born. The teacher from California had the name (USA) already betrayed to those around them.
Teacher fell 50 meters into a ravine
But on December 23rd the great misfortune happened. The couple were hiking in Plakias on the south coast Crete’s broken up. Loud “GreekReportsr“ Clara lost her balance near the Preveli monastery and fell 50 meters into a ravine.
This was so difficult to access that 21 Firefighters and other rescue workers needed hours – until late into the night – to rescue the American woman. For first aid, they took Clara first to the medical center in Rethymno and then to that hospital in Chania.
Baby died in fall
But any help came too late for little “Theo”. He hadn’t survived the fall in his mother’s womb. Meanwhile, Clara was fighting for survival in the intensive care unit. She had fractures all over her body and severe injuries to her skull and chest.
On December 29th, the sad certainty for her partner and her family who had traveled there: Clara was declared brain dead.
Family decided on organ donation
Her relatives decided on site that life support measures should be stopped. “Clara loved helping and teaching others. Of course she is Organspenderinand we are pleased that her heart, liver and pancreas have already been accepted for donation,” writes her family on the online platform “CaringBridge“.
Mother and son were taken to Athens on January 1st for cremation. Clara’s partner Eliott will take some of the ashes to various locations Greece and bring it to Turkey, which he actually wanted to travel to with the love of his life. Most of the ashes will travel to the USA with Clara’s relatives.
On “CaringBridge,” Elliott writes about the past few days he spent with Clara’s family: “We celebrated her, hiked to beaches and made memories.” That’s exactly how she would have wanted it.
