Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau intends to resign

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau intends to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party in the near future. As the Globe and Mail newspaper reports, citing informed sources, the resignation will follow before the party congress, scheduled for January 8. It is possible that the statement will be made as early as January 6.

The government’s popularity continues to decline due to rising inflation, declining gross domestic product and the housing crisis. In the latest survey, only 28% of respondents said they were satisfied with the Prime Minister’s performance, 68% said they were dissatisfied with Trudeau.

Parliamentary elections will take place in Canada on October 20. Liberals hope a change in leadership will give them a chance for success. The most likely successors to Trudeau are Minister of Finance Dominic Leblanc, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly and former head of the Central Bank Mark Carney.
