The trial of a French citizen accused of espionage has begun in Azerbaijan

The trial of French citizen Martin Ryan, who is accused of espionage, has started in Azerbaijan. He faces 10 to 15 years in prison.

Arrested in December 2023, Ryan is accused by Azerbaijan of gathering secret information about its military cooperation with Turkey and Pakistan and also helping French intelligence in recruiting French-speaking Azerbaijanis.

Ryan stated to the court that he recognizes himself as “partially guilty”, admitting that he may have performed the actions attributed to him, but unconsciously and involuntarily, and is ready to present evidence confirming this during the trial.

Ryan worked in Azerbaijan for a food importing company that also offered consulting services. Prosecutors allege he also facilitated a link between French intelligence and Azerbaijani national Azad Mamedli, who is charged with treason and faces 15 years to life in prison if convicted. Mamedli pleaded not guilty at Monday’s hearing.
