Italian journalist Cecilia Sala released in Iran

The Italian government reported that Iranian authorities have released journalist Cecilia Sala, who was detained on December 19, from prison. She has left Iran and is on her way to Rome. At the moment it is unclear whether there is a deal in sight.

Prime Minister Georgia Meloni herself informed her parents of Cecilia’s release. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office noted that this was the result of hard work by diplomats and intelligence officers.

Note that on January 5, Meloni met in the United States with Donald Trump, the elected American president. One of the issues discussed was facilitating the release of the 29-year-old journalist.

Sala collaborates with the newspaper Il Foglio. She is also the author of podcasts produced by the Chora Media platform. The platform administration reported that Cecilia was being held in solitary confinement in the Evin prison. The prison, intended primarily for political prisoners, is known for its harsh conditions.
