Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati held talks in Damascus with the de facto head of the Syrian state, Muhammad al-Sharaa, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group. This is the first visit of a Lebanese prime minister to Syria in 15 years.
As al-Sharaa said, issues of bilateral relations were discussed, including suppressing the activities of smugglers at the border and Syrian deposits in Lebanese banks. They also discussed the strategy for developing relations. “We have many common interests,” the Syrian leader noted.
Let us note that for more than two years there was no president in Lebanon, and Mikati, who himself resigned, served as the head of not only the government, but also the state. A few days ago, the commander of the armed forces, Joseph Aoun, was elected president.
