Japan activates tsunami warning due to a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in the south

The Japan Meteorological Agency has activated a tsunami warning in two prefectures in the south of the country after an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, with no evidence of possible damage caused by the tremors.

Experts have located the epicenter of the earthquake off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture, one of the two – along with Kochi – in which warnings have been activated due to the possible rise in water levels. In Miyazaki, an increase of around 20 centimeters has been recorded, according to the Kiodo news agency.

The Meteorological Agency, which initially placed the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.9, has reported in its bulletins that the earthquake originated at a depth of 30 kilometers. Regarding the intensity of the tremors, it has placed them at a level of less than 5 on a scale between 0 and 7.

Authorities are examining whether Monday’s earthquake can give some kind of clue about the potential mega-earthquake that Japan expects in the Nankai Trench, where the Eurasian and Philippine tectonic plates meet. The country, which fears an earthquake with a magnitude greater than eight in this area, activated the alert for the risk of a mega-earthquake for the first time last year.
