Surprise discovery during recovery of old aircraft wreckage in Lake Constance

Zürich – It was on the morning of June 18, 1957, when the Swissair plane with the registration HB-IRK went into a spin in Swiss airspace over Lake Constance – a nosedive! The aircraft, which took off from Zurich, was on a training flight with young pilots. The Douglas DC-3 hit the surface of the water at high speed and sank in a few minutes. All nine occupants died.

Much of the rubble was destroyed immediately after Plane crash recovered. But almost 68 years after the accident, a Swiss association is still lifting wreckage from the accident Lake Constance.

Cantonal police confirm the find

And now human remains have been discovered in one part! The Thurgau cantonal police (Switzerland) confirmed the discovery of an object resembling a bone.

Forensics are investigating the discovery

It is now being examined whether it is actually a human bone from an occupant of the machine. The police I took the item to the St. Gallen Forensic Medicine Institute. The case is now with the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

Remains discovered 210 meters deep in Lake Constance

The Schiffsbergeverein Romanshorn is working on lifting the engine of a Swissair plane. The remains were found at a depth of 210 meters, said club founder Silvan Paganini. The association wants to create a memorial for the nine inmates.

“I would not have expected that we would still find remains today, 68 years after the crash,” said Paganini. “It also raises questions as to why the crash site was not searched more thoroughly at the time.”
