Socialist Paris City Hall announces that it will stop publishing on X

Paris City Hall, led by Anne Hidalgo, from the Socialist Party, announced this Thursday (16) that it will stop using Elon Musk’s social network X, next Monday (20), in search of “peaceful spaces of expression” and for its commitment to “the veracity of information, a decision already taken by other French regions and associations”.

“It’s a difficult decision”, stated the city hall in a message on X itself, in which it declared that, over time, this social network became “complex and then impossible”.

“Complex because it reduces the reach of factual and objective messages. Impossible because it feeds hate speech and misinformation, the lack of moderation of which becomes problematic”, he explained.

The city hall added that Paris will continue to interact on other social networks, mainly on Bluesky.

Mayor Hidalgo already left X more than a year ago, in November 2023. At the time, she justified the decision by saying that the social network had become a “weapon of mass destruction of democracies”.

In an article published in the newspaper The WorldHidalgo recalled that, in the beginning, Twitter, X’s previous name, was “a revolutionary tool”, but that today “this platform and its owner (Musk, although she did not name him) act deliberately to exacerbate tensions and conflicts” .

In recent weeks, several French cities, departments and regions have also announced that they are abandoning the X. For example, the Nouvelle Aquitaine region did so in November 2024 and Brittany announced it on Tuesday (14).

On the same day, a group of 86 French environmental and solidarity associations announced the same decision.

Anne Hidalgo is an admirer of the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and, in 2020, granted the PT member the title of honorary citizen of Paris.
