“Mercy for migrants”. The president’s reaction

Bishop asks Donald Trump to have “mercy” for migrants. And the president reacts with an eloquent grimace. Trump today declared that he had not witnessed “good service”, after being questioned directly by the bishop of the Diocese of Washington, who urged him to have “mercy for the people in the country who are afraid”, especially immigrants and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“Let me make one final appeal, Mr. President: millions of people have placed their trust in you and, as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God,” said female bishop Mariann Edgar Budde in the his blessing, during the National Interreligious Prayer Service in honor of Trump’s inauguration.

“In the name of our Lord, I ask you to have mercy on the people of our country who are scared.” The nun added that there are “gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some of whom fear for their lives.” The cameras documented Trump’s reaction, with an evident grimace.

Budde also referred to “the people who harvest our produce, clean our offices, work on farms, wash dishes in their restaurants and work night shifts in hospitals. They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors.”

While returning to the White House, Trump responded to those who asked him how the mass went. “Not too exciting, right? Didn’t seem like a good service, no. They could do a lot better.”
