Ice-cold job offer: Cooks and craftsmen wanted for Antarctic stations

Die British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for new specialists for its research stations via its homepage. We are looking for chefs, carpenters, electricians and plumbers, among others.

Interested parties can earn up to 66,000 euros a year – plus a bonus! Accommodation, meals, arrival and departure as well as special clothing are organized by the employer. Ice cold hook: The place of work is the Antarctica.

The Antarctic stations seem to be popular places to work; employees rave about their time in the eternal ice in a recent BAS announcement. Chef Oliver Hubert, for example, worked in the kitchen of a star restaurant on the mainland.

“Working as a chef in Antarctica is a completely different experience than anything I’ve done before,” says Hubert. “The pressure is on to create interesting and nutritious meals with limited supplies. But the view from the kitchen is just epic.”

Work in Antarctica possible from May

Recruitment dates begin between May and September. Annual salaries vary depending on the profession between 29,000 pounds (around 34,000 euros) and 54,000 pounds (more than 66,000 euros) per year.

For comparison: in German kitchens, the average annual salary is 32,300 euros. Electricians earn an average of 41,760 euros a year in this country and carpenters earn 35,500 euros.

In addition to the money, the researchers also attract prestige: “The successful applicants make a contribution to the Sciencewhich is crucial for understanding our changing world,” said a spokesman for the institute.

What does a carpenter do in Antarctica? scrape ice. Eloise Saville works as a carpenter at the southernmost BAS facility: “I scrape ice off wood, ride snowmobiles and build things in one of the most extreme places on earth.” Her verdict: “It’s not just cold, it’s just cool!”
