Jean-Jacques Wondo, the Belgian-Congolese military expert who has been in prison in the Congolese capital Kinshasa for eight months, has been examined by a doctor. He could also be cared for, his family said on Friday.
A doctor’s visit was the main question in an open letter launched on Monday. It had now been signed more than a thousand times by people from the academic, medical and judicial world.
The European Parliament on Thursday approved a resolution demanding the immediate release of Wondo, a Belgian citizen. The parliamentarians also demand that the Congolese government overturn Wondo’s death sentence in the first instance. He was previously sentenced to death along with 36 others for an attempted coup in Kinshasa in May.
The appeal ruling was expected on Friday, but according to several sources it has been postponed until next week.
