AfD candidate fails at election to the state parliament vice in Thuringia

The Thuringian state parliament has denied the controversial Thuringian AfD MP Jörg Prophet to the Landtag Presidium. In a secret election, the 63-year-old Nordhäuser missed the necessary majority in parliament on Thursday with 35 votes in favor and 41 votes against.

Even before the election, the factions of the CDU and BSW had made it clear to fundamentally carry a candidate proposal for the office of Vice President of AfD classified as a “secured right -wing extremist” in Thuringia. However, the AfD must make suggestions that are not perceived by the rest of the house as a provocation. According to CDU parliamentary group leader Andreas Bühl, the candidate Prophet did not meet this requirement.

Already during the mayor election campaign in Nordhausen in 2023, the memorials Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora had already pointed out that Prophet was mentioned in the Thuringian Constitutional Protection Report of 2021. The authority certifies the AfD candidate a “closed, revisionist historical picture”.

Previously, on Thursday, only the AfD candidates had reached the necessary two -thirds majority on Thursday. The candidates of all other factions for the body, which is involved in the Free State in the election of the senior prosecutors, missed this hurdle.

In the current legislative period, the AfD has a blocking minority in the occupation of judge positions in the Free State. Conversely, the AfD needs 13 votes from other parties to have an AfD candidate elected to the office of state vice president.
