EU says Trump measures were not unanswered

“The US decision deeply regrets imposing tariffs on European exports of steel and aluminum. Tariffs are imposed – bad for companies, worse for consumers,” Von Der Leyen wrote in a statement that also published on their social networks.

“Unjustified tariffs applied to the EU will not be unanswered: they will trigger firm and proportional contracted. The EU will act to safeguard their economic interests. We will protect our workers, companies and consumers,” added the committee chairman.

In turn, in a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, the European Commerce Commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, said Brussels “is currently analyzing the scope of Trump’s” determined measures before announcing the countereight.

“This is the way to protect the interests of Europe, but it is not our favorite scenario. We are still committed to constructive dialogue, we are ready for negotiations and to find mutually beneficial solutions whenever possible,” said Sefcovic.

“There is a lot at stake for both sides. We want it to work, because it is the logical thing to do,” added the commissioner.

The decree signed on Monday by Trump states that imports of steel and aluminum “threaten to compromise national security” and that the agreements in force so far expire on March 12, 2025, date from which the products in question will be subject to New tariffs.

The first contacts between Brussels and Washington after the publication of the measure will take place on Tuesday, when Von Der Leyen will meet in Paris with US Vice President Jd Vance as part of a worldwide summit on artificial intelligence.
