Result of the first Russia-USA summit: Ukraine is overlooked

Such conciliatory tones had announced that they were already after the previous week one -hour phone call between the President Trump and Putin to be heard. They talked about Ukraine, according to Trump, but above all about the “great benefit” that the USA and Russia “will one day pull out of cooperation”.

The basic tenor is clear: the Kremlin hopes that the United States would resolve its sanctions against Russia after successful peace negotiations. The Trump government is pushing for the end of the war as quickly as possible as a diplomatic success.

In the next few weeks, both sides want to have further discussions to ultimately set up a summit between Trump and Putin.

Putin’s “Invitation” to Selenskij

Even in the event of re-election, he would not be a legitimate president in Putin’s eyes: Russia has no longer recognized a Ukrainian government since the Maidan protests in 2014.

On Wednesday, Selenskij will also travel to Saudi Arabia for talks. The Russian delegation will then have already left the country – and with it the chance of serious negotiations between the two warring parties.
