The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Germany, Friedrich Merz, has advocated after watching the Foreign Minister, Olaf Scholz, for completely completing the conversations to constitute a new government coalition, in principle between the conservative block and social democrats.
“The themes are crowded and we cannot tolerate any delay,” said Merz, who had already previously recognized his intention to complete the dialogue before Easter. Except for surprises, the leader of the CDU will become the next German chancellor.
In this sense, the opposition leader has stressed that “the world situation changes drastically every day”, while trusting to start making decisions as soon as possible to straighten the economic course of the country. The Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) has confirmed on Tuesday the 2024 recession, with a 0.2 percent GDP drop in the last quarter.
Scholz has already clarified that he will depart from the negotiations for the future coalition and that he will limit himself to acting as a chancellor until the name of his substitute is confirmed. Once the command cane has been given, it will remain as a deputy in the Bundestag, the lower house of the German Parliament.
The Social Democratic delegation will be headed by one of its leaders, Lars Klingbeil, who already held a first contact with Merz on Monday. On the other hand, the leader of the CDU met on Tuesday with political allies such as the general secretary of his party, Carsten Linnemann, and Bavaria’s prime minister, Markus Sobeer.
