Italy wants Ukraine to be secured in the peace agreement

Prime Minister Meloni said the peace agreement in Ukraine needed security from the Atlantic Alliance, so that the conflict did not recur.

“Peace in Ukraine can only be achieved if Kiev has an appropriate security to make sure that what we have seen in the past three years has not happened again,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said after a meeting with a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Rome on February 26.

Meloni added that security guarantees must be implemented in the “framework of the Atlantic Alliance”, referring to NATO.

“Because I think this is the best framework to ensure unimaginable, temporary peace and prevent the risk of the tragedy of recurring war in Europe,” she said.

The comment was made by Meloni when Britain and France were trying to persuade US President Donald Trump to ensure security for Ukraine as part of any peaceful agreement with Russia.

London and Paris are also proposing to deploy European peacekeeping forces with troops of about 30,000 people coming to Ukraine after reaching an agreement to stop fighting with Russia. The UK and France want Mr. Trump to ensure that the US will provide preventive measures such as aerial support, intelligence or logistics, to support the European forces to monitor the ceasefire.

The recent Trump administration increased criticism of Ukraine and pursuing negotiations with Russia, causing NATO allies in Europe to worry.

French President Emmanuel Macron last week summoned two emergency meetings with European partners, including Italy, in order to agree on how to react before the US moves, enhance leverage for Ukraine and strengthen the capacity. European defense.

“We have to be the courage to act to strengthen the European pillar of the Atlantic Alliance, making up for the North American pillar because NATO is still our security foundation,” Meloni said. “To do that, we clearly spend more money, but also need to be able to increase investment.”

Meloni’s right -wing alliance government silently discussed the possibility of sending the army to join the peacekeeping force to Ukraine after the conflict ended, according to Italian media.
