Both sides are responsible for serious violations
Turk PolkerThe Supreme Commissioner for the UN Human Rights Commissioner’s Rights, strongly attacked Israel’s conduct in its military activities in Gaza when presenting a new report on the state of human rights in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. “Nothing justifies the shocking way in which Israel has managed its military actions in Gaza, which consistently violated international law,” Tyrke said in a hearing yesterday (Wednesday) in the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The report presented by the Supreme Court of Human Rights in the UN also accuses Hamas for serious violations since October 7.
Israeli absence and previous denials
Notable in his absence was a representative of Israel, who did not appear in the hearing to present the position of Israel, a fact that the Chile representative expressed (criticized) to her. In the past, Israel has denied accusations of war crimes and violations of international law in Gaza and the West Bank, claiming that its actions are aimed at Hamas activists and are intended to reduce civilian injury.
“Massive destruction and Humanitarian disaster”
“The level of destruction in Gaza is enormous – from homes, through hospitals to schools,” Tirk said, adding that “the restrictions imposed by Israel … created a humanitarian disaster.” The Supreme Commissioner also emphasized the heavy concerns about the violations of international law by Hamas, which he said “may have made additional violations of humanitarian law in Gaza, including a deliberate location of military destinations alongside Palestinian citizens.”
Tirk called for an independent investigation of all violations, but expressed doubt about the correctness of the Israeli judiciary to ensure full responsibility according to international standards. On the other hand, he noted that he was unaware of any steps taken by Hamas and other groups to punish those responsible for rights.
The report also states that there was no answer from Israel to the UN Commission’s request for human rights for full approach to Israel and the Palestinian territory “occupied” for investigating violations by all parties.
“Serious accusations and international reactions”
The Palestinian representative on the council accused Israel of committing war crimes and murder against Palestinians, as well as preventing assistance to the Gaza Strip. “Tents were denied (in Israel) along with modular homes. It (Israel) prevented access to food and drugs,” he told the council.
The Palestinian representative even strongly condemned settler violence and Israeli military operations in the West Bank, mentioned in the report.
