The English referee David Coote, known primarily because of the insult to Jürgen Klopp, has been banned by the European Football Union. As the news agency AP reported, citing the UEFA control, ethics and disciplinary commission, the Englishman must not lead a game by June 30, 2026. He had violated the “basic rules of decent behavior” and “discredited football and especially the UEFA,” it said.
Last December, the English referee organization separated from COOTE after the 42-year-old was previously suspended. The background is, among other things, a video in which he is said to have commented contemptuously about the former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp. Cote had recently apologized again.
In addition, another clip became public, in which the COOTE is to be seen, as he consumed cocaine in a UEFA Hotel in Germany in early July 2024 in Germany. When asked about this, he told the English newspaper “Sun” that he had “rarely” taken drugs and made “bad decisions in a personal context” in his life. For a long time he had problems that would have to do with his oppressed homosexuality.
Cote worked for the European IM team for video evidence. Among other things, he was in use at the round of 16 against Denmark as an assistant to the Video Assistant Referees (VAR). (dpa)
