Travelers to the United Kingdom can start requesting new entry documents

The British government introduced the document in November 2023. Currently, non-Europeans who travel to the United Kingdom must be able to submit the document without a visa or legal resistance rights. For Europeans (except Irish) it will be mandatory from 2 April. They can request it online from Wednesday.

The ETA is valid for two years (or shorter if the passport expires earlier). “During that period, the person can travel as often as he wants to go to the United Kingdom, for a total stay of six months,” says the website of the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs. Those who have a visa need no ETA. The British government promises that the decision usually falls within three days.

The extra document will normally have few consequences on the border crossings. “The ETA is integrated in the passport, so it is automatically read when scanning the passport through the UK Border Force,” says Eurostar, the operator from high -speed trains to London.
