The Electoral Commission of Romania invalidates the candidacy of the ultra -rightist Calin Georgescu

The Central Electoral Commission of Romania (CEC) has dismissed the candidacy of the ultra -right -wing presidential candidate Calin Georgescu in a vote of 10 against 4 because they consider that it does not meet the legal conditions to be a candidate in a decision against which it fits appeal before the Constitutional Court.

“The Central Electoral Commission has adopted the following decisions: (…). Rejection of the registration of the independent candidacy of Calin Georgescu in the elections to the 2025 Romania presidency,” the CEC reported in an official press release.

The communication informs of the dismissal of a total of four candidacies, that of Georgescu and those of Ion Popa, Maria Marcu and Nicusor Dan. “The full text of the decisions taken will be available after publication on the website of the Central Electoral Commission,” concludes the text, signed by Cristinel Grosu.

The CEC explains in a document later released that the reason for the dismissal of the Georgescu candidacy is based on the decision of the Constitutional Court of December 6, which considers the same “inadmissible.” “The Constitutional Court issued an implicit and binding opinion as a generality for the breach of the conditions provided by the law for the registration of a candidacy (…). After the resumption of the electoral process, the same person cannot meet the conditions for their appointment as president of Romania,” he argued.

Georgescu presented his candidacy last Friday as an independent candidate and in a matter of hours several resources were presented against it, both before the CEC itself and before the Constitutional Court.

“It’s a direct blow to the heart of world democracy! I only have one message: if democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall!” Georgescu published after knowing the decision of the CEC. “This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Now Europe is a dictatorship! Romania is under tyranny!”

Protests against CEC

After knowing the decision, several hundreds of Georgescu supporters concentrated before the headquarters of the CEC have loaded against the fences that protected the headquarters of the institution and have launched bottles and other objects against police and journalists, while they have set fire to the urban furniture. Agents have used tear gas against protesters.

A police spokesman, Marius Militaru, recalled that the demonstration is not authorized and stressed that agents have received order not to respond to provocations. “We have enough staff to manage the situation and now it is calmer. We are trying to reduce tension with dialogue,” he said. Military has referred to information about an injured agent: “I can’t confirm that there is an injured agent. I need additional information.”

Resource to the Constitutional

Former Minister of Justice Tudorel Toader has explained in statements to the newspaper ‘Adevarul’ that there is no option to rectify the candidacy. “There is no procedure to invite a candidate to complete the documentation. He cannot come tomorrow and present another candidacy,” he said.

The route goes through a resource to the Constitutional. “The law says that within 24 hours who is not satisfied with the decision of the CEC may present an appeal before the Constitutional Court. The Court examines and admits the appeal and annuls or not the decision of the CEC,” he added. In any case, the list of candidacies must be closed for March 15.

Internationally, billionaire Elon Musk, an advisor to the US president, Donald Trump, who has described in his social network, X, of “madness” has reacted the news of the annulment of the Candidacy of Georgescu.

Musk has linked in a later message the decision with the Hungarian-American tycoon George Soros: “Soros again” in response to another message in X in which they denounce the “censorship of right-wing voices throughout Europe” and the “interference in the Romania elections” that attributes to the NGO Avaz and its interventions in countries such as Poland, Spain, Germany or France.

Georgescu, related to Russia’s thesis, won against Todod Prognosta in the first round of the presidentials of November 24. However, the Constitutional annulled the process a few days before the second and definitive round after the authorities put in doubt the campaign of Georgescu himself and alerted of an alleged Russian interference.
