Denmark is willing to send troops to Ukraine “if necessary”

Denmark Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Monday that the country is willing to send troops to Ukraine “to maintain peace” in the framework of the Russian invasion of the territory “in case it is necessary.”

Rasmussen has expressed that “in case a European presence in the Ukrainian territory is necessary to achieve a fire or a peace agreement, Denmark is prepared for it.” This has spoken during a press conference with the Minister of Defense, Troels Lund Poulen, after a meeting of the Foreign Policy Committee that has allowed them to receive support from much of the political formations.

“It is important that Europe sends important signals both to (Vladimir) Putin and Washington. This is what we are saying now: if the point is necessary, then we will be prepared,” said Rasmussen.

For its part, Poulen has stated that at the moment “there are no real plans” on this matter since there have been no decisions on “concrete contributions”, something that “will depend on how events are developed” on the ground, as collected by the radio station of Radio Danesa DR.

However, both ministers have defended that there are few possibilities that a “NATO defense alliance take the initiative to send peace troops”, so it will be countries that now have to choose “what guarantees they give to Ukraine.” “This is what Denmark is doing too,” added Poulen.

“Now, the French and British parts have taken the initiative to review what might be necessary, but it is early to know if troops should be deployed,” he said before stating that Baltic countries “should not be affected.”
