Mr. Trump asked Putin to forgive thousands of Ukrainian soldiers surrounded

US President Trump called on President Putin to preserve the lives of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers being surrounded by Russia, seemingly mentioning the Kursk front.

“We yesterday had a very good discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin and likely the horrible, bloody war would soon end,” US President Donald Trump wrote on the Truth Social on March 14.

The statement was made after the Kremlin boss at the end of March 13 met the American specialist Steve Witkoff to discuss the proposal of a 30 -day ceasefire in Ukraine by Washington. The Kremlin said there was a basis for “optimistic cautious” after the meeting, adding that Putin “was generally unified” with Mr. Trump on Ukraine’s issue, although he still emphasized that there was still a lot of work to do.

“However, at the present time, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are being fully surrounded by the Russian army and in a very bad, vulnerable condition. I urgently asked President Putin to preserve their lives. This may be an unprecedented massacre since World War II,” Trump said.

The US president did not mention any specific front, but it seemed to refer to the war in Kursk province. President Putin said on March 13 that Ukrainian soldiers “no longer escape from Kursk” and will “only have two options: surrender or die”.

The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously said that the units of the North Army completely controlled Sudzha, the strategic town and the largest urban area of Ukraine who won the Kursk campaign. The Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov said that its units have liberated about 1,100 km2, equivalent to more than 86% of the initial territory occupied by Ukraine in this province.

The Russian Defense Ministry today announced that Moscow’s forces re -control the Goncharovka village on the outskirts of Sudzha town. Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian border forces, said Russian soldiers were trying to cross the border to enter Sumy province, adjacent to the Kursk region.

“We continue to discover a number of small shock groups trying to penetrate the territory and approach the border,” he said.

Ukraine in August 2024 opened the Kursk attacking campaign with the desire to force Russia to withdraw troops to protect the border province, prevent the opponent’s advance on the Donbass Front, and create leverage for the Volodymyr Zelensky government at future negotiations.

However, the situation is not as expected Ukraine. After the first time, the Russian army strengthened the forces and mobilized tens of thousands of troops for the Kursk Front, while maintaining the momentum in Donbass.
