Mark Carney – the new Prime Minister drove Canada to deal with the United States

Mark Carney on March 14 took office, became the 24th Prime Minister of Canada, replacing Mr. Justin Trudeau driving the country between political instability and increasing pressure from US President Donald Trump.

Carney was born on March 16, 1965 at Fort Smith, Northwest Territories territory and raised in Edmonton city, Alberta province. He received a Bachelor of Economics Harvard University in 1988 and was later a master’s degree and doctoral degree at Oxford University.

Carney had three nationality including Canada, England and Ireland, before moving to the only nationality, Canada. Observers say this is not legal, but is considered a wise step in politics.

Mark Carney was the executive director of Goldman Sachs multinational investment bank and worked for 13 years in London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto. Later, he was appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Canada in 2003.

In 2008, he became the Governor of the Central Bank of Canada and undertook this job until 2013. Carney was later recruited to become the Governor of the Central Bank of England in the period of 2013-2020. He began to be the United Nations special envoy on climate and financial actions since 2020.

Choosing Carney as Prime Minister is considered a step to save the situation of the ruling Party, when the level of credibility of Mr. Trudeau and the party has dropped sharply recently. The freedom is concerned that without replacing Mr. Trudeau, they would be disrjmented to the opposition conservative party in the general election in October.

Nanos’s mid -January polls showed that the free Party received 20% of their support, while the conservative party of Pierre Poilievre had a support rate of up to 47%. Recent surveys showed that the ratio of support for the free party has increased to 34%, but still lower than 37% of the Conservative Party. Therefore, some people believe that Carney will only be the Prime Minister for about 7 months before having to give this position to Mr. Poilievre after the election.

No matter how long Carney served as the Prime Minister, his term was rated as unique. He was the first Canadian Prime Minister without political experience and has never held any position in the Government’s cabinet.

He said the Canadian central bank leader overcomed a financial crisis in 2008-2009 and then led the British Central Bank over the Brexit period that was equipped with the necessary foundation for him at the moment.

One of the biggest issues that Carney faces is the relationship that is worse with the United States. President Donald Trump has repeatedly blamed Canada for illegal immigration into the United States, threatening to merge Canada as the 51st state and declared high tariffs on imported goods from this country. Tax attacks are being postponed until early April while the White House continues to put pressure on Canada to prevent Fetanyl Flow smuggling across the US border.

In the recent speech, Carney announced his government would “build a new trade relations with reliable trading partners”, and affirmed that he would impose a retaliation tax until “Americans respect us”.

Carney said Mr. Trump “attacked families, workers and businesses in Canada. We could not let him succeed”.

“The United States is not Canada and Canada will never be part of the US in any way. We do not cause war but Canadians are always ready to respond when someone acts. Therefore, Americans need to understand that in trade as well as hockey, Canada will win,” he said.

Daniel Beland, director of the Canadian Research Institute at McGill University, described Carney as “a boring, lacking man”, but when Canada was pressed by trade tensions with the United States and the threats of merger, his discipline spirit could be the advantage.

“Carney shows the image of a leader that everyone can rest assured and make sure what he is talking about,” Beland said.

However, Lori Turnbull, a researcher at the University of Dalhousie, warned the challenges that Carney could face to connect with the public.

“He is not an effective communicator in public. He has a good foundation to deal with the economic crisis but it is difficult to be able to succeed in politics if he cannot entice everyone to join,” she said.

The opposition conservative party is seeking to strengthen attacks targeting Carney. The new Prime Minister of Canada is a rich man, spending most of his career abroad, working for Goldman Sachs based in the US and was once the president of one of Canada Brookfield’s largest corporations.

“The Conservative Party is trying to sketch him as an elite, unable to understand what the ordinary people go through. I think if you cannot communicate effectively, he is at risk of being assigned to that,” Turnbull said.
