Starmer alerts that Putin will break any peace agreement if he does not include security guarantees for Ukraine

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has warned Thursday that he is “absolutely clear” that the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, will break any peace agreement with Ukraine if the pact does not include security guarantees for kyiv, thus urging Ukraine allies to move from theory to action.

Starmer has advocated “converting political intention in reality, the concept into plans”, because it is “of vital importance” to act in this regard to put a brake on Moscow. “We know one thing with certainty: an agreement with nothing behind the something that Putin will violate,” said the ‘Premier’ during a visit to a military base.

“We know it because it already happened before. And I am absolutely certain that it will happen again,” said the British Head of Government, referring to the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 and also to the land invasion initiated by Moscow on East Ukraine in February 2022 and for which a peace agreement is now sought.

Thus, Starmer has stressed that “nothing can be given for granted” with Russia and has encouraged the members of Ukraine-a group of European and NATO countries called as the ‘coalition of volunteers’-to determine as soon as possible the safety guarantees for kyiv before even that a hypothetical agreement is reached.

These statements of the prime minister occur on a day in which the United Kingdom has hosted a meeting of representatives of the army of about thirty of these countries member of the ‘Volunteer Coalition’, including Spain. The objective of London is to move on to an “operational phase”, according to Sky News.

Putin ordered at the end of February 2022 the invasion of his neighboring country, unleashing a war for which a possible ending is now glimpsed thanks to the mediation of the United States once Donald Trump returned to the White House.
