Brandenburg wants to make more neighbors into nursing assistants

People in need of care should be able to get easier help from neighbors in Brandenburg. With the recognition of these people as so -called neighborhood helpers, they can then be rewarded with money from the nursing care fund. “It is about everyday support: accompaniment to shopping, helping to go to the doctor, support in paperwork or simply a little company going for a walk,” said Minister of Social Affairs Britta Müller (independent) in the state parliament. “These tasks should not be solely on the shoulders of the relatives. Our society has to stand together here.”

According to the ministry, there are more than 214,000 people in need of care in Brandenburg. Around 89 percent of them would be cared for at home. In order to relieve people in need of care and their relatives in everyday life, individuals should be recognized as neighborhood helpers, said Müller. For this purpose, the legal requirements would be prepared regardless of a federal legislative procedure.

Recognition as a neighborhood helper

With a majority, the state parliament decided to make an application from the coalition factions of the SPD, BSW and CDU, according to which the state government should create the legal requirements for recognizing committed individuals as neighborhood helpers.

Aids and benefits that support people in need of everyday life can be financed from the relief funds of the care insurance of 131 euros per month. According to the ministry, over 31,500 people in need of care use such offers in Brandenburg. However, the need is greater.
