The Supreme Court of Brazil imputes Bolsonaro for a coup attempt

The Supreme Court of Brazil has agreed by majority to impute former president Jair Bolsonaro and seven of his allies for the crimes of rebellion and attempted coup d’etat presented by the Prosecutor’s Office after attacks on the institutions in Brasilia on January 8, 2023.

“There are reasonable evidence that supports the complaint,” said the rapporteur of the case in the Supreme Court, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who has indicated that the Brazilian former president “knew, managed and discussed the draft” in which the coup plan was written, in which he has also involved the rest of the defendants.

This is the former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres, of the former heads of Defense Walter Braga Netto and Paulo Nogueira; of the former Security Cabinet Chief, Augusto Heleno Ribeiro, of former intelligence director Alexandre Ramagen; of the former Marina Almir Garnier Santos; And who was his right hand, Colonel Mauro Cid.

In his argument, De Moraes has shown images of the violent events of that day and has refuted Bolsonaro’s defense that alleged that the participants were religious and elderly people. “No Bible is seen.” That was not a “Sunday in the park,” said the rapporteur of the case.

“The criminal organization followed all the necessary steps to depose the legitimately elected government. Objective that, sought with all the efforts, did not come true due to circumstances that the denounced failed to overcome: the resistance of the army and exception measures,” he explained.

After the imputation of Bolsonaro and his seven partners, the instruction phase will take place, in which the parties have to collect evidence and take a statement to witnesses, before the court finally makes a decision. The Brazilian president faces a penalty of up to 40 years in jail for these crimes.

Bolsonaro has not been present during the vote, which has preferred to continue by videoconference from the office than, as a parliamentarian, he has his son Flávio Bolsonaro in the Senate, along with other allies.

The Prosecutor’s Office accused Bolsonaro of trying to prevent in a coordinated manner for the result of the presidential ones of 2022, although “the plan” began in 2021 with another series of actions and statements with which he questioned the decisions of the courts and the cleanliness of the electoral system.

Likewise, the Prosecutor’s Office has presented evidence of the existence of a plan to carry out not only a coup d’etat, but also the murders of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the vice president, Geraldo Alckmin, and the judge of the Supreme, Alexandre de Moraes, in the so -called Plan ‘Green and Yellow Puñal’.

All this, culminated with a mob of hundreds of followers of the Brazilian president, breaking into the Plaza de los Tres powers, attacking and assaulting the headquarters of the Congress and the Supreme Court.
