Red Cross is worried about dams in Myanmar
“Roads, bridges and government buildings in Myanmar have been destroyed,” says Maria Manrique of the Red Cross. “We are currently also worried about large dams that we are keeping an eye on.” Specifically, it concerns dams on the Irrawaddy river, who could and could have suffered damage.
“The first reports point to major damage in the center of Myanmar, in the state of Myanmar, but also in Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Magway, Sagaing, Shan and possibly other regions,” said a spokesperson for the UN Humanitarian Affairs Service to Reuters. “We collect information about the affected people, damage to infrastructure and the immediate humanitarian needs to give response. As soon as there is more information, we will share it.”
