Leak in gas pipeline causes a major fire at Kuala Lumpur: more than 100 injured

A leak in a gas pipeline caused a major fire on Tuesday near the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. More than a hundred people were injured during festivities before the end of Ramadan, the local authorities report.

The leak stretched over a length of approximately 500 meters and the flames shot tens of meters into the air, according to the fire brigade of the state of Selangor. Fifty homes were hit by the fire.

Local residents who celebrated the end of Ramadan had to leave the zone. “Suddenly we heard a powerful bang and the chaos was total,” testifies a local resident of the newspaper The Star.

The gas pipeline is owned by the Petronas state -owned company. The gas supply was closed.
