Vulcan eruption in Iceland, alerts and evacuations near Grindavik

Experts detected an intense underground magmatic activity in the early hours of the morning. At 6:30 (8:30 in Italy), a strong seismic swarm, with over 200 shocks, preceded the first deformations of the land in the Sundhnuk area and even inside Grindavik, according to what reported by the Icelandic meteorological office. Already at that moment, the scientists had called an eruption “probable” and, around 9:45, a crack in half kilometer long, which could continue to expand. Under the surface, the magma has already spread for about eleven kilometers, an unprecedented length from November 2023.

With the increase in seismic activity, the Civil Protection has activated the evacuation protocol for Grindavik, the closer center closest to the fracture, where around 3,500 people reside. The authorities urged citizens to leave the area, warning that the threat could be more serious than recent events.
