Historical record in the Senate: The Legislature spoke more than 25 hours in a row

Democratic Sen. Corey Morning from New Jersey set tonight (between Tuesday and Wednesday) a historic record in the American Senate after signing continuously for 25 hours and 5 minutes, and broke the record that senator Strum Thormond held since 1957. The 55-year-old morning began his speech on Monday at 7pm (local clock) and stated that he intended to continue “as long as he was physically able.” He ended the speech only the next evening, when he looked lame tired.Booker opened his speech with a dramatic statement: “I am intentionally rising to the usual businesses of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able. I get up tonight because I believe in honesty that our country is in the crisis.”

New Jersey Senator used the prolonged speech to protest against the Trump Government policy, which took office for about two and a half months. “In just 71 days, the President of the United States has caused so much damage to American security, their financial stability, and the basic elements of our democracy,” he said. “These are not ordinary times in America, and should not be treated as even in the United States Senate.”

The symbolic meaning of peak breaking

Booker’s speech broke the record that Senator Strum Thormond of Southern Criolina, who in 1957 spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes. Thormond, who supported racial separation, then stated in order to delay the approval of the Civil Rights Law-and in the United States noted the symbolic meaning in the morning, African-American, is the one who broke his long peak.

Booker explicitly referred to the symbolism of Thormond’s climax: “I’m here despite his speech,” he said. “I’m here because as strong, the people are stronger.” Booker also noted that since he came to Senate, he always felt that it was “a strange shadow hanging over this institution” that the peak was held by a person who was signed against civil rights.

Booker, who has been in the Senate since 2013, is the first black American representing New Jersey in Senate and one of only five black senators who are now in the 100 -year -old legislative body.

During the speech, morning, he was alerted to possible cuts in the Medicaid program (the Federal Health Program for low income), expressed concern from businessman Elon Musk in the Trump administration, warning of “approaching constitutional crisis.” The democratic senator emphasized that his party must find the determination and the bold to resist the Trump administration. “We all have to look in the mirror and say, ‘We’ll do better,” he said morning.

During the long speech, this morning received support from his Democratic friends in the Senate, which helped him by asking questions that allowed him shorts from the prolonged speech sequence. Senator Chris Murphy remains alongside him all night, and returned to a good morning who did the same when Rafi Namam in 2016 for nearly 15 hours on weapons control legislation.

Ahead of the peak breaking, the Senate was filled with his democratic colleagues who came to listen, and members of the House of Representatives joined and also stood on the margins of the Senate Hall for support. “Your power, your boast, your clarity – were just no less amazing, and all America listened to what you say,” said the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Keeps.

Enormous physical effort

To hold on to the speech, it revealed morning that he had bored for days before the speech and stopped drinking fluid in the night before. US media reported that he had suffered from muscle cramps during the day, but his voice was strengthened as the speech was lengthened into the evening. Booker has revealed that he has stopped eating food on Friday and stopped drinking water on Sunday – so he can make a sequence and without interruption.

 

When the speech ended, the Senate Hall broke out with applause when the guard declared that a morning broke the climax. Booker finished his speech in calling all Americans to respond not only in resistance to Trump’s actions, but also with grace and generosity towards their communities: “Maybe I’m afraid – a voice may be shaking – but I’m going to talk more.”
