Coup in Guinea Bissau, President Embalo "safe and sound" in Senegal

The President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, dethroned by a military coup on Wednesday, has arrived “safe and sound” in Senegal aboard a chartered plane, the Senegalese Foreign Ministry announced in a statement.

Military forces took “total control” of Guinea-Bissau on Thursday and suspended elections, the results of which were due to be announced, in this West African country with a history marked by coups. One of the main opponents of President Embalo, Domingos Simoes Pereira, excluded from the presidential elections on November 23, he has been in prison since the coup d’état.
