Putin and Trump envoy fail to reach peace agreement

After five hours of negotiations in the Kremlin, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and White House special envoy Steve Witkoff failed to reach an agreement on the peace plan for Ukraine, according to Kremlin international policy advisor Yuri Ushakov on Tuesday (2).

According to Ushakov, despite the impasse, some proposals sent by Washington were considered partially acceptable.

“For now we have not reached a compromise, but several North American proposals are more or less acceptable. They can be discussed,” he told the Russian press. According to him, the positions of the two delegations “are no further” than before the meeting.

Ushakov stated that the meeting was “useful, constructive and substantial” and highlighted that there is still “a lot of work to be done both in Washington and in Moscow”. According to the Kremlin, Tuesday’s dialogue addressed central points of the plan originally presented by US President Donald Trump, complemented by four additional documents delivered by Witkoff during the visit.

Among the topics discussed was the territorial issue, a point considered decisive for Moscow. “We specifically address the territorial problem, without which we do not see a solution to the crisis,” Ushakov said. Russia insists on Ukrainian withdrawal from Donbass as an essential condition for any agreement.

The Russian advisor also stated that Putin supported part of the United States’ proposals and rejected others. “On some points we could agree, and the president said this to his interlocutors. Others aroused our criticism”, he declared, before accusing European countries of adopting a “destructive” stance in the negotiations.

The meeting was also attended by Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s advisor and son-in-law, as well as Kiril Dmitriev, the Kremlin’s economic emissary considered one of the organizers of the Russian plan presented in the negotiations. According to Dmitriev, who commented on the meeting on his account on platform X, it was “an important day for peace”.
