“Politics and sport are the most common categories that appear again and again in the top lists,” said spokeswoman Lena Heuermann. “There is no sign of disillusionment with politics in Germany, on the contrary.” Many people have dealt intensively with political issues. This was also shown by questions such as “What is the debt brake?” or “What is the firewall?” and “How do I vote in the federal election?”

In addition to the Handball World Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, users were also interested in the Women’s European Football Championship. “This really shows that women’s sports have arrived at the center of society,” said Heuermann. “And it also takes into account the performance that the women brought on the pitch.” People were particularly interested in goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

In the top ten German personalities, the rapper arrest warrant landed in first place with his documentary, ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Heidi Reichinnek (Die Linke). “The documentary about the arrest warrant aroused a lot of interest among people. And even people who couldn’t identify with the music at all watched the documentary so they could have a say,” said the spokeswoman. Third place for left-wing politician Heidi Reichinnek underlines how important social media has now become for politicians. “It also shows where young people get their information from,” emphasized Heuermann.

Labubu and action figure trend

In terms of series, the true crime series “Monster: The Story of Ed Gein” came in ahead of the Korean series “Squid Game” and the British series “Adolescence”. In the romantic series, the German series “Maxton Hall” with Harriet Herbig-Matten and Damian Hardung in the lead roles beat the American series “The Summer I Turned Pretty”.

“Everything that is a topic in the virtual and real world is reflected in Google search queries,” said Heuermann. “The Summer I Turned Pretty” played a major role on social media, with many people taking a stand on whether they were “Team Conrad” or “Team Jeremiah.”

When it comes to viral trends, the action figure trend prevailed over the tradwife trend and the Labubu trend (plush toy figure from China). The action figure trend allows users to create images of themselves or other people as detailed action figures with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). In the tradwife trend, women present themselves as “traditional women” who thrive in their roles as housewives and mothers.

“Every trend has a counter-trend,” explained the spokeswoman. “In the last year, a lot has happened politically, including terrible things. And as a counter-trend, searches for self-care have increased enormously.” These included protein recipes, alcohol detox, yoga retreats and matcha.

According to Google’s observation, overall search behavior has fundamentally changed. Many people are no longer just searching with keywords, but increasingly with entire sentences or questions, combined with the desire for more personalized answers.
