Law professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) Carlos Portugal Gouvêa pleaded guilty to firing pellet shots near a synagogue in the state of Massachusetts, on the eve of the Yon Kippur holiday, one of the holiest for Jews, in October.
According to information from the Department of National Security, released on Thursday (4) by the agency Reutersthe professor, who was in the country as a visiting professor from Harvard, agreed to leave the United States.
The Brazilian professor was arrested last Wednesday by the United States Immigration and Customs Service (ICE) after his temporary visa to stay in the country was revoked by the American State Department.
At the time of the events, police authorities told the local newspaper Brookline News that Gouvêa fired two shots near the Zion Temple on Beacon Street. The professor would have justified the action by saying that he was “catching mice”.
After the episode, the Brazilian was placed on administrative leave by Harvard.
