Albanese on the situation in Gaza: “The first genocide that awakened the world”

UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese spoke at the closing of the international conference in Doha. She called the situation in these territories apocalyptic.

“This is not the first genocide in the history of mankind. In my lifetime alone, it is at least the third, if not the fourth and fifth. But this is the first genocide that has awakened global public consciousness and caused a global response. Palestine shows us what the right of might is,” Albanese said.

According to her, despite the truce, Israel continues genocide in Gaza. “This demonstrates how power and impunity destroy the international system,” Iranian propaganda channel Press TV quoted her as saying.

“Gaza demonstrated the hypocrisy of the West. However, Palestine spurred a global awakening, the driving force of which was the youth, workers, employees mobilized in all countries of the former colonial system – the United States, Europe and beyond,” the official said.

She also condemned the sanctions imposed on her by the United States, which effectively deprived her of access to the international financial system: “But I still have my dignity and my voice. I will not remain silent as long as there is air in my lungs.”

Sanctions against Albanese were announced on July 9, 2025. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote that the sanctions were due to Albanese’s “illegitimate and disgraceful efforts to encourage the International Criminal Court to act against US and Israeli officials, companies and leadership.”
