Fractured eye socket, broken jaw and loss of sense of smell: manager uses “brute force” in gas station

“The facts are very serious,” the prosecutor said. An incident happened a while ago in a Ghent gas station between four people, including the manager and two customers. The customers had bought a prepaid ticket at the station a few days before the incident, but something turned out to be wrong with it. They returned to the gas station to ask for an explanation.

According to the victims’ lawyer, a discussion got out of hand. “And that about something very banal,” she said. “The defendants, including the manager and one of his entourage, felt it necessary to lash out severely at my clients. One of them suffered a fractured jawbone and a fractured eye socket and has lost his sense of smell to this day.”

Verbally aggressive

According to the prosecutor, camera images show how two customers walked into the gas station. There was some chatting, but soon a discussion arose. “Suddenly the manager came from behind his counter and grabbed one of the victims. He punched him straight in the face,” the prosecutor said. “Another victim was beaten up.”

According to the manager’s lawyer, customers entered the gas station already agitated. “They both also smelled of alcohol,” the lawyer said. “They did not indeed use physical violence, but they were verbally aggressive and that is also the reason why my client came from behind his counter.”

Verdict on January 12.
