“We want everyone who passes by on the street, tram or car to see them, for Croatia to see that each of those gloves represents a life that could have been saved, to see that violence starts with symbols, but also that our resistance starts with symbols,” said Puljak.

She recalled the incident that happened on Saturday, December 6, at Trg bana Jelačića, when a man ran over the flowers that the artist had placed in memory of 38 women killed in the past three years. “By trampling on the roses, he also trampled on the memory of their lives. It was not just vandalism. It was a brutal symbolic attack on every woman who has ever lived in fear, on everyone who kept silent in order to survive, on everyone whom the state failed to protect,” said Puljak, adding that Croatia has another murdered woman since Saturday.

She asserted that what happened on the Square was not an isolated incident, that the problem was not only that one čman, butć in everything that preceded it, in a climate that in recent years increasingly tolerates the humiliation of men, in messages that tell women that they should be silent, be obedient, be subordinate. “The problem is that he believed that he was allowed to do it, that it was socially permissible, that no one would stand in his way.”

Puljak called for changes in the law that will improve risk assessments, speed up measures to prevent victims of violence from approaching, enable removal of perpetrators and better supervision in high-risk cases.

Rada Borić also spoke about violence against women. (Klub Možemo!) asking if women have the right to a life without violence. He believes that violence against women is still insufficiently reported, that there is a lack of social support and solidarity, as well as a system that protects women from violence. “In Croatia, there are more and more people who think that violence against women is acceptable, which is visible in the street, on the Internet, and in the number of women killed,” said Borić.

She added that the cost of violence against women is huge and costs the global economy over 1.5 trillion dollars, and manifests itself as direct costs for the police, healthcare, counseling centers and shelters, and as indirect costs in the form of lost wages, productivity, and reduced quality of life.

Danica Baričević (HDZ) pointed out that corruption has a name and a surname, and that no one is protected. “Judicial bodies work in accordance with the Constitution and the law with the full support of us, our party president and the Government in discovering all the perpetrators and bringing them to justice, unlike the left opposition which would continue to hide its weed like a snake’s legs, so when someone of theirs is under the measures of criminal prosecution, for them it is an alleged political persecution or at the very least wrong timing,” said the HDZ representative. “Under the leadership of Andrej Plenkovi, Croatia and the HDZ are changing, and this is bothering the opposition and they are afraid of that,” added Baričević.

As an example, he cited last week’s International Book Fair, which was held in that building. “The roof began to leak, visitors were greeted by buckets in the impressive marble hall, and on almost all the doors of the sanitary cisterns, there was an inscription that they were not functional. Parts of the facade are slowly but surely falling off, and some windows cannot be closed”, he stated and called for the renovation of the Home of Croatian Veterans to be included in concrete investment plans, or through national sources or EU instruments.
