Al-Arabi al-Jadeed: Egypt announced the conditions under which a meeting between al-Sisi and Netanyahu could take place

Representatives of Egypt, in a conversation with Al-Arabi al-Jadeed, commented on an Axios publication, according to which the White House is trying to organize a summit with the participation of Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The publication’s interlocutors called such a meeting inappropriate – and not only because of the situation in the Gaza Strip. They stated that Israel’s continued control of the Philadelphia Axis and the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing was a violation of bilateral agreements.

The Egyptian representative stressed that official Cairo refrains from political steps that could be perceived as legitimizing Netanyahu. In his opinion, the Israeli Prime Minister is using the summit as a diplomatic success, trying to divert influence from his failures.

According to him, the conditions for the meeting – the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Philadelphia Axis and the return of the security situation to the one that existed before the war – will restore minimal trust in Israel. Egypt is also demanding that Netanyahu support a gas agreement between the two countries.

Cairo also insists that the summit, if it is held, will be linked to resolving the situation in the Gaza Strip. Egypt is one of the mediators of the settlement and insists that the meeting is not a concession to Israel, but part of a political process.
