War in Ukraine: the American peace plan envisages kyiv joining the European Union from 2027

Ukraine’s accession to the European Union from January 2027 is envisaged in the United States peace plan to end the war between kyiv and Russia, a senior official familiar with the matter told AFP on Friday.

“It is stipulated, but it is a subject of negotiation, and the Americans are in favor of it,” said this official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Before these statements, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured Thursday that the United States continued to demand significant concessions from his country in negotiations to end the war with Russia, including the withdrawal of its troops from Donbass.

Donald Trump, for his part, said he was “extremely frustrated” by kyiv and Moscow and now wants “action” to end the war, the White House spokesperson reported.

A “decisive” week for Ukraine

On the side of the European Union, the heads of state and government of the 27 will meet at a summit in Brussels on December 18 to discuss their financing plan for Ukraine, with the possible use of Russian assets frozen in Europe.

“The coming week will be decisive” for Ukraine, underlined the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday evening. The head of the European executive indicated that she had spoken with the partners of the “coalition of the willing”, which brings together support from kyiv. “Despite the pressure, we remain absolutely firm on our goal: achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” she insisted on the social network X.

“Sustainable means that no peace agreement must contain the seeds of future conflict or destabilize the European security architecture as a whole,” she added. “We also discussed the need for robust and credible security guarantees.”

“I briefed leaders on our efforts to secure funding for Ukraine for 2026-2027. Our proposals are on the table, and the feeling of urgency is shared by everyone,” she assured.
