Iranian Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist arrested

Mohammadi, 53, was arrested “violently” by Iranian security forces, the foundation said in a message on the social network X, in which it detailed that it had received “reliable information” about the incident.

According to the foundation, activists Asadollah Fakhimi, Akbar Amini, Hassan Bagherinia and Abolfazl Abri were also detained during the ceremony in honor of Alikordi, a well-known lawyer who was found dead in his office in Tehran a week ago.

Mohammadi chanted several chants during the tribute, including “Long live Iran,” according to images shared by the foundation, before being detained and attacked.

The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner was on parole and, at the end of November, publicly denounced that the Iranian authorities had “permanently” banned her from leaving the country and had not issued her a passport so she could visit her two children, whom she has not seen for 11 years.

Mohammadi has been out of prison for a year when she was released due to health problems. The activist has already been arrested 13 times, convicted nine times and imprisoned for the last time in 2021.

Despite the convictions and imprisonment, the human and women’s rights activist continued to denounce human rights violations in Iran, including the use of the death penalty and violence against women who do not wear the Islamic veil.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the activist in 2023 “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and the promotion of human rights and freedom for all”.
