Meloni assures that the migrant detention centers in Albania “will work”

The Italian Prime Minister, Georgia Meloni, has again charged this Sunday against the “politicized judicial decisions” and has assured that her plan for the use of detention centers for migrants outside the EU “will work” despite the “delay” due to the sentences.

“Yesterday they told us that the only way forward was open ports. Today the EU’s discourse is border protection, reinforcement of repatriations, combating criminal networks and agreements with countries of origin and transit, regulation of NGOs, hotspot in territories outside the EU following the model of the Italy-Albania protocol and now there are even joint lists of safe third countries to protect our procedures from politicized judicial rulings,” said Meloni from the Atreju party that organizes its party, Brothers of Italy, this year in Rome.

For Meloni, it has been the “ideological rulings” that “have prevented transfers to Albania”, but now Europe is approving a list of the countries of origin of these immigrants. “It is as we have always said: the Albanian centers are going to operate!”, although “a year and a half late” due to judicial reluctance.

He has also referred to the clash in recent days between the United States and the EU, with President Donald Trump’s criticism of European countries. “Trump has said most emphatically that the United States wants to disengage and Europeans must organize to defend themselves: hello Europe,” he said.

“For eighty years we have outsourced our security to the United States, pretending that it was free, but we had to pay a price and that price is called conditioning. Freedom has a price,” Meloni argued in his speech.

For this reason, he has defended increasing Europe’s defense capacity “equal in strength and respect to the American one” in order to be able to “speak with all the powers of the world as befits a glorious civilization like the European one.” This “also means strengthening dialogue with the United States, but in a dialogue between equals and not in conditions of subalternity,” he stated from the gardens of the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. For Meloni “Europe is not in its decline”, but rather “it is a living civilization that still has a mission.

Meloni has also “proudly” defended the performance of her Government at the internal level and the “unity” of the parties that support her. “They speak badly of Atreju and it is the best edition in history. They speak badly of the Government and the Government rises in the polls,” he highlighted before attacking the left in the opposition.

In fact, Meloni’s allies and deputy prime ministers were also present at the Rome meeting: Antonio Tajani (Forza Italia) and Matteo Salvini (League), along with Maurizio Lupi (We Moderates).
