The world’s rarest great ape may have disappeared due to Indonesia’s floods

Since the devastating Cyclone Senyar ravaged Sumatra on November 25, the endangered primates have not been seen in the area, conservationists said. It is now feared that the animals have been swept away by the floods and landslides. While some believe the monkeys have moved to a safer place, a carcass found in the area, reportedly that of an orangutan, is further fueling conservationists’ fears.

There are fewer than 800 Tapanuli orangutans left. Any loss has serious consequences for the species, conservationists say.
