Nobel laureate was beaten in Iran during arrest

Relatives of Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi said she was hospitalized after being beaten during an arrest several days ago.

The 53-year-old human rights activist contacted them by phone and told them about what had happened. According to her, plainclothes agents beat her on the head and neck with sticks. The authorities do not comment on these statements.

Narges spent more than ten years in prison. In 2021, she was sentenced to 13 years in prison for “anti-state propaganda” and “threat to state security.” She denies these accusations.

In December 2024, she was temporarily released from Evin prison for medical reasons. She was arrested again after speaking at a ceremony in memory of human rights activist Khosrow Alicordi, who recently died under suspicious circumstances.
