Former alderman Freddy Bertin died at the age of 83: “Freddy was a leading figure, someone with expertise”

Former alderman and founder of N-VA Freddy Bertin has died at the age of 83. He founded the local branch of N-VA Nevele on June 21, 2011. “The party started as a small group of committed people, but under his leadership it grew into one of the stronger departments in East Flanders,” says good friend and co-founder of N-VA Raf Walgrave.

In 2012, N-VA Nevele took part in the municipal elections for the first time and the party was immediately part of the board. “Freddy was a leading figure, someone with expertise,” says Raf. “What he didn’t know himself, he had specialists find out. He worked efficiently and correctly, without self-interest.”

Merger with Deinze

In November 2016, Bertin succeeded party member Nele Clarebout as alderman after she resigned due to a move. He was given powers such as finance, mobility, local economy and tourism. He also played an active role for months during the preparatory negotiations surrounding the merger of Nevele with Deinze.

In addition to his political career, Freddy Bertin also had a well-filled professional career. Before his retirement, he was chairman of the Social College in Ghent. He was previously hired as Director of Personnel and Organization at Campina in 1994 and was also deputy association commissioner at the Flemish Association of Catholic Scouts.

“Freddy was a very pleasant man, broadly interested and a strong supporter of AA Gent,” says Raf. “When he went for something, he did it with knowledge and conviction.”
