Kleinmachnow starts reporting system for wild boars

Images and videos of wild boars marauding in residential areas had repeatedly made the rounds on social media. Kleinmachnow also made the headlines because the police chased after a lioness in the summer of 2023, which then turned out to be a wild boar.

The data on wild boar sightings should now be documented more professionally. The aim is to gain insight into whether fences and securing garbage cans help prevent wild boar damage. “It also allows the administration to intervene more quickly in dangerous situations or illegal feeding points,” it said. The aim is to reduce the number of wild boars through hunting.

The community calls for use of the reporting platform

“Only through continuous feedback can we understand where deterrence measures are effective and where further action is needed,” said Mayor Bodo Krause (CDU). “We need reliable data to understand how the population is developing and whether our measures are effective,” explained the initiator of the project, Barbara Schlesinger.

Before setting up the digital reporting system, the community representative collected wild boar reports from the population via WhatsApp and Facebook. Almost 1,500 data sets have been recorded and evaluated manually since the beginning of 2024, as the municipality announced. The data provided administration and hunting tenants with a picture of the situation.

How does online reporting work?

The digital reporting form records information such as the place and time of the wild boar sighting, the number of animals, their behavior and possible feeding places. Photos and descriptions can be left. “In just a few minutes, a report can be submitted directly from your smartphone,” says the municipality.

The digital system was initially tested in a small group of citizens. Now all residents in Kleinmachnow and the neighboring towns of Stahnsdorf and Teltow as well as in neighboring Berlin can use it.
